Family Friday - Elastegrities: How to Make Them! (And What They Are)
When architecture professor Lefteris Pavlides first wove a rigid paper diamond 35 years ago, it inspired him to create a variety of shapes out of both rigid and elastic parts. These shapes have an unusual property: when squeezed, they compress into solid structures, but when released, they spring back to their original form. The internal elastic forces maintain the shape's integrity, thus the name “elastegrity.” Join MoMath at the latest installment of its popular Family Friday series on August 23, when Professor Pavlides will teach visitors how to fold and weave paper into rigid crystals and shapeshifting elastegrities. Come learn how to make miniature marvels out of paper and math!
