Mike Naylor - Naked Geometry (4:00 PM)

Registration is closed for this event
What kind of geometry can we make with our bodies? Using animations, digital pictures, and sculptures, mathematician and award-winning artist Mike Naylor will share his techniques for making cool shapes from human bodies and using them to explore creative mathematical ideas. Frieze patterns, polygons, polyhedra, connected graphs, fractals, and tessellations will be created using only hands, arms, legs, and torsos, allowing everyone to physically become a part of mathematics. Experience the beauty of the human form, the beauty of geometric structures, and the beauty of ideas and relationships.

Math Encounters is a public presentation series celebrating the spectacular world of mathematics and presented by the Simons Foundation and the National Museum of Mathematics.

For further information, call the National Museum of Mathematics at (212) 542-0566 or e-mail mathencounters@momath.org.

Please note, this presentation is designed to be accessible and engaging to a general audience. As a rule of thumb, it would be best enjoyed by participants age 12 and up.

Please check our online shop for books by Math Encounters presenters.  As a special opportunity just this month, introducer Cliff Pickover will be available to sign copies of The Math Book, winner of the 2011 Neumann Prize.   Pre-order your copy when you register for Math Encounters this month; note that your registration with pre-order must be received by July 29th to guarantee availability of your copy of The Math Book at the event.
